A temp gun for dabs will get you within about 20°F of the truth if you hold it four inches from the bucket, and it will lie to you by 100°F or more if you stand back and point it at the whole banger. That gap is the entire story, and it is why so many people buy one, use it twice, and go back to counting seconds.
Quick answer: A temp gun reads a dab banger accurately only if you hold it within four inches of the bucket. Most consumer models are 12:1 distance-to-spot, so at a foot away they average the whole banger plus cold air and read 90°F to 150°F low. Aim for 440 to 510°F for rosin, 480 to 550°F for wax, and 545 to 620°F for diamonds.

Below is what an infrared thermometer actually reads on quartz, the two settings that decide whether the number means anything, the temperatures worth aiming at, and the case for skipping the gun entirely.
An infrared thermometer does not measure heat. It measures the infrared energy leaving a surface and converts that to a temperature using an assumed emissivity value. Point it at a torched banger and it reports the temperature of the outside wall of the bucket, averaged across whatever circle of surface its optics happen to see.
Two things decide whether that number is useful.
Emissivity describes how efficiently a surface radiates infrared energy, on a scale from 0 to 1. Most inexpensive guns are locked at 0.95. Quartz sits around 0.93 in the 8 to 14 micron band that consumer sensors detect, so the built-in setting is off by roughly 2 percent, which works out to about 10°F at dab temperatures. Nobody's flavor is ruined by that.
The transparency worry you see repeated in forums is a real effect aimed at the wrong band. Quartz transmits infrared below about 2.5 microns and becomes effectively opaque past 3 microns, so a consumer 8 to 14 micron sensor is reading the surface, not seeing through the glass. Where transparency does bite is thin-walled clear glass measured with a short-wavelength industrial pyrometer, which is not the tool anyone is using at a dab station.
This is the one that matters. A typical budget gun is rated 12:1, meaning at 12 inches from the target it averages the temperature of a 1 inch circle. A 25mm banger bucket is almost exactly 1 inch across. Stand back 18 inches, which feels natural because the quartz is glowing, and the gun is now averaging a 1.5 inch circle: the bucket, the joint, the weld, and a slice of room-temperature air behind it. Every cool thing inside that circle drags the reading down.
Hold the gun 3 to 4 inches from the bucket wall and the sampled spot shrinks to roughly a quarter inch. That reading is worth trusting. The laser dot is an aiming reference, not the measurement area, and confusing the two is the single most common reason a gun reads 90°F to 150°F low.

Two caveats keep these honest. The inner surface where the oil lands runs hotter than the outer wall you are measuring, by something like 20°F to 40°F on a 4mm bucket, more on thick quartz. And a torched banger sheds heat quickly, roughly 10°F to 20°F every five seconds in the first half minute, so a reading taken 20 seconds before you drop is a reading of a banger that no longer exists. Measure, then dab within a few seconds, or measure at the moment you plan to drop.

Thickness is why two people with the same gun and the same reading get different dabs.
Thin quartz, around 2mm, tracks the outside and inside closely, so a reading is nearly honest. It also dumps heat fast, which shortens the usable window to maybe 20 seconds. Standard 3mm to 4mm quartz holds a wider inside-to-outside gap but gives a long, forgiving window and is what most timing charts are built around. Thick 5mm and up, including many competition-style buckets, holds heat so well that the outside wall can read 60°F cooler than the floor where the oil lands, and it stays in range for well over a minute.
The practical rule: measure the same spot on the same banger every time, and treat the number as a repeatable index rather than an absolute truth about the oil.
You care about the inside of the bucket. The gun sees the outside. On a 4mm bucket that gap is manageable and repeatable. On a 2mm bucket it is smaller, and on thick 5mm quartz it is large enough to change which row of the chart you are actually in.
A large share of the $15 to $25 units on the market stop at 550°C, which is 1022°F, and that is plenty. The problem models are the food and HVAC guns that stop at 500°F or 600°F. If your target is 580°F for diamonds and the display reads HI, the gun is not broken, it is the wrong tool for this job.
A polished spinner cap, a chrome torch body, or a bright lamp bouncing off the bucket will pull readings around by 20°F or more. Glowing quartz itself is less of a problem than people assume, because the sensor works in a band well outside visible light. Take the measurement from the same angle every time so at least the error stays consistent.
By the time you torch, set the gun down, pick it up, aim, read, and reach for the dabber, the banger has dropped through the range you were trying to hit. That is not a flaw in the instrument. It is a mismatch between a measurement workflow and a 60 second cool-down.
Heat, then wait. That is the whole technique, and it costs nothing.
For most 25mm quartz on a mid-size torch, a 30 second heat followed by a 45 to 60 second cool lands in the flavor range. Thick 4mm quartz wants closer to 60 to 75 seconds of cooling. Thin quartz needs 30 to 40. The exact numbers are yours to find, but they are stable: the same banger, the same torch, and a canister that is not nearly empty give the same result every session.
This is the only job a gun does that timing cannot do for itself, and it takes about ten minutes.

Four variables move a calibrated count enough to notice. A butane canister below about a quarter full burns cooler and adds 5 to 10 seconds of heating. A cold room pulls the cool-down faster. A carb cap left resting on the bucket during the cool holds heat and slows the drop. And a fresh clean bucket sheds heat differently than one carrying residue, which is one more reason to swab after every dab.
Load the concentrate into a cold bucket, cap it, then apply heat until the oil starts to bubble and pull. There is no target surface temperature to measure because you are watching the material instead of the glass. Flavor is excellent, chazzing risk drops sharply because the quartz never sees an empty red-hot cycle, and you save the price of the gun. A temp gun exists because a torched banger is always falling through the range you want. Hardware that holds a set point removes the problem rather than measuring it.
An e-nail wraps a coil around the banger and a controller holds a set point indefinitely. An e-rig does the same inside a self-contained unit. Either way there is nothing to time and nothing to measure. Set points read cooler than torch readings for the same result, because the coil keeps feeding heat instead of letting it drain away. An insert is a small quartz cup that drops into the bucket. Heat the banger, drop the insert, load the oil into the insert. The insert cools more predictably than the bucket and buffers the oil from the hottest glass. Quartz control tower inserts run $9.28 in both hollow and solid, in 1 inch and 1.25 inch sizes.
Titanium holds heat aggressively and is very hard to read with a gun set for quartz, since polished titanium sits near 0.3 emissivity while the gun assumes 0.95. Ceramic heats slowly and cools slowly, which makes counting easy and measuring nearly unnecessary. Neither material rewards a thermometer the way quartz does.
Expect to spend $20 to $40. Above that you are buying industrial features that do nothing for a dab station.
If the goal is repeatable temperature rather than a number on a screen, thermal mass and airflow control do more than measurement does.
A carb cap is the single highest-value part. Restricting airflow lowers the pressure inside the bucket so the oil vaporizes at a lower temperature, which is exactly the outcome the gun was supposed to help you find. A snail spinner carb cap runs $9.99, and a cactus orb cap $12.49.

Does a temp gun work on a titanium nail? Better than on quartz, actually. Titanium has lower emissivity than quartz, closer to 0.3 for polished surfaces, so an adjustable gun is worth having. Oxidized or heat-colored titanium climbs toward 0.6 and reads more stably.
Can I use my kitchen or forehead thermometer? No on the forehead type, which is calibrated for a narrow human range and stops well below 200°F. A kitchen gun works if it reaches at least 600°F, but check the spec before assuming.
Why does my gun read 380°F when the quartz is glowing? Quartz glows faint red around 1000°F, so if it is visibly glowing and reading 380°F, you are too far back and averaging cold surroundings into the spot. Move to within four inches and read again.
