Most cleaning advice starts and ends with 91 percent iso and salt, which is fine until you are out of iso, you hate the smell in a small apartment, you have kids or pets around, or you just do not want to buy a bottle of solvent every three weeks. The alcohol-free methods are not a compromise. On quartz they are the correct answer, because the fix for a dirty banger is heat and a swab, not a soak.
Here is what actually removes resin without alcohol, what only looks like it does, and the two or three things you should never do to a rig.
Resin and reclaim are mostly cannabinoids and oxidized terpenes. THC has an octanol-water partition coefficient around 6 to 6.4, meaning it is roughly a million times happier in an oily or organic solvent than in water. That single number explains everything about rig cleaning. Water does not dissolve resin. It never will. Rinsing a dirty rig with hot tap water and calling it done just moves the film around.
Isopropyl alcohol works because it is a small organic molecule that plays with both worlds. It grabs the oily stuff and stays miscible with the water already in your rig.
So if you take alcohol away, you need a different mechanism. There are exactly three that work:
Every alcohol-free method below is one of those three, or a combination. Anything that is not one of those three is a folk remedy, and I will tell you which ones those are.
Water is excellent at carrying away whatever the other three mechanisms have already loosened. That is why every method here ends with a long rinse. Skipping the rinse is how people end up with a rig that tastes like salt or soap for a week.

If your complaint is "my banger is dirty," you do not have a cleaning problem. You have a timing problem.
After you finish a dab, the bucket sits somewhere in the 300F to 400F range for about a minute as it cools. In that window the leftover oil is a thin liquid film, not a hardened puddle. One dry cotton swab, one pass around the inside wall, one pass across the bottom, and the bucket is clear. It takes four seconds and uses no solvent at all.

A 4mm-bottom bucket holds heat noticeably longer than a 2mm one, so thick quartz gives you a wider window to work with.
Keep a stack of swabs and a dab tool within arm's reach of the rig. If the swabs live in another room, you will not do this, and then you will be reading cleaning guides again in three weeks.
Swabbing prevents buildup. It does not reverse it. If your bucket already has a cloudy white or grey haze that will not wipe off, that is chazzing, which is etched quartz. It is a surface change in the material, not a deposit sitting on top of it. No amount of salt, alcohol, boiling, or scrubbing brings it back, and a chazzed bucket keeps chazzing faster because the rough surface holds oil. Coarse salt has mass and edges. Fine table salt dissolves almost instantly in 160F water and then you are shaking a saltwater solution, which is just water with extra steps. Kosher salt, coarse sea salt, or Epsom salt all hold their crystal structure long enough to do the scraping. Epsom salt is the cheapest per pound and works fine, though it dissolves faster than kosher.
If your rig has tight percolator slits, salt will not reach them no matter how hard you shake. That is what the boiling method is for.
For a small rig or a nectar collector body with a neck too tight for salt to tumble properly, uncooked rice is the better abrasive. It is lighter, it is longer, and it tumbles through narrow passages that salt just packs into. Rice plus hot water plus 90 seconds of shaking gets into places salt cannot.

Boiling is the strongest alcohol-free method available because heat does what solvents do, just slower. Submerged in 212F water, resin softens to the consistency of warm honey and floats off the glass on its own. You do not scrub. You just wait.
Borosilicate glass, which is what almost every quality rig and bong is made from, has a linear thermal expansion coefficient of about 3.3 x 10⁻⁶ per Kelvin, roughly a third that of ordinary soda-lime glass. Lab-grade borosilicate 3.3 is generally rated to survive a temperature differential around 166C, which is about 300F. That is a large margin, and it is why boiling a borosilicate rig is not the reckless move people assume.
But the margin only exists if the whole piece changes temperature together. Drop a room-temperature rig into already-boiling water and the outer surface hits 212F while the thick joint collar is still at 70F, and that is a real 142F differential concentrated at the thickest, most stressed part of the glass. That is how rigs crack.
So: put the rig in cold water, then bring the pot up to a boil with the rig already in it. Simmer 20 to 30 minutes. Then turn the heat off and let the water cool with the rig still submerged. Never move a hot piece into cold water.
Put a folded dish towel in the bottom of the pot so the glass is not resting on bare metal that is 100 degrees hotter than the water.
These are the three most-recommended alcohol-free options online. Only one of them earns its reputation.
Effervescent denture cleaners are not just fizzy baking soda. A typical tablet pairs sodium bicarbonate and citric acid as the effervescent engine with real oxidizers, commonly sodium perborate at roughly 15 to 30 percent by weight and potassium monopersulfate at 10 to 40 percent. Those oxidizers attack the discolored, oxidized portion of the resin film, and the fizzing provides gentle agitation into percolator slits where salt cannot go.
Two tablets in a rig filled with hot water, left 30 minutes, will visibly lighten a moderately dirty piece. They will not strip a rig that has gone six months. Rinse hard afterward, because you have just filled your rig with an oxidizing bleach.
The classic move is to dump both in together and watch it foam. What you are watching is acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate neutralizing each other into sodium acetate, water, and carbon dioxide. The fizz is the two ingredients destroying each other's cleaning power in real time. Neither one is a good solvent for cannabinoid resin to begin with.
Used separately, 5 percent white vinegar is decent on the white mineral scale that hard water leaves in a bong, which is a different problem than resin. Baking soda alone is a mild abrasive, less effective than coarse salt because the grains are smaller and softer. If someone tells you vinegar and baking soda cleans a dab rig, they cleaned a lightly used rig and credited the wrong thing.
Dish detergent is a surfactant, which is a legitimate mechanism for oil removal. A few drops in 160F water, shaken with salt, meaningfully outperforms plain water and salt. The catch is rinsing. Soap residue in a rig is a genuine flavor killer and it takes three or four full rinses to clear. Use it on a deep clean, not a weekly one.
Silicone is the one material where the alcohol-free method is not just adequate, it is obviously superior.
Food-grade platinum-cure silicone is stable to roughly 400F to 450F, with decomposition setting in above about 450F. Standard dishwasher cycles run around 120F to 150F, which is nowhere near that limit. So a silicone rig or bong can go straight on the top rack. No solvent, no shaking, no salt.
Better still, use the freezer. Put the silicone piece in a bag, freeze it for two hours, then flex it hard. Resin has a much higher glass transition temperature than silicone, so at 0F the resin is brittle and the silicone is still rubbery. The buildup cracks off in flakes and falls out. It is the single most satisfying cleaning trick in the hobby and it costs nothing.
The same logic applies to silicone containers, pads, and nonstick surfaces. Anything on a nonstick paper or PTFE sheet can be scraped when cold instead of dissolved. That is also why hash makers store cold.
Do not use alcohol on cheap silicone anyway. Low-grade fillers can swell and go permanently tacky.

Quartz gets its own section because the material tolerates something glass does not: direct flame.
If a bucket has a hardened puddle in it, heat it with a torch until the residue goes glassy and bubbles, then let it drop to swabbing temperature and wipe. Two or three cycles clears almost anything short of chazzing. Fused quartz has a softening point far above anything a butane torch delivers, so short heat cycles are not what damages a banger.
What damages it is the thermal cycling combined with residue. Every time you torch a bucket with old carbon still in it, that carbon bakes into the surface and starts the etching process. Torching a clean bucket is nearly harmless. Torching a filthy one is how a $50 banger dies in two months.
A cold alcohol soak on a banger leaves behind a thin film that flashes off on the next heat cycle and tastes like solvent for the first two dabs. Heat plus cotton leaves nothing behind at all. Even people with a full bottle of iso on the shelf should be swabbing hot and skipping the soak.

Chasing a chazzed bucket with harsher and harsher cleaning just gets you a worse-tasting dab and a bigger mess. A fresh bucket costs less than two months of solvent.

Borosilicate 3.3 handles roughly a 166C differential, but only when the whole piece moves together. Never introduce a hot piece to cold water or a cold piece to boiling water.
Freeze it for two hours and flex the buildup off, or run it on the top rack of a dishwasher. Platinum-cure silicone is stable to about 400F to 450F and a dishwasher only reaches 120F to 150F, so there is a wide margin. Skip alcohol on silicone entirely.
If you swab the banger warm after every dab and change the water every session, a salt shake every two weeks and a boil every two or three months is plenty. If you do neither, you will be deep cleaning weekly and replacing bangers quarterly.
Dedicated non-solvent glass cleaners exist and they work through surfactants and mild abrasives. They cost more per clean than salt and they are not dramatically better on a rig you maintain. Buy one if you want the convenience. Buy a reclaim catcher and a box of cotton swabs first, because those change how often you need any cleaner at all.
