Buy a 2.5-inch grinder. It is the size that fits almost everybody, because a 63mm chamber holds enough flower for a session bowl or three cones in one twist and still drops into a jacket pocket. Go smaller only if you actually carry it in jeans every day, and go to a 4-inch only if you prep in batches.

Quick answer: Grinder size is the diameter across the lid, not the height. A 2-inch grinder handles about a gram per pass and fits a coin pocket, a 2.5-inch handles roughly two grams and suits most people, and a 4-inch XL takes an eighth without packing. Chamber capacity scales with the square of the diameter, so 2.5 inches gives you about 60 percent more room than 2 inches, not 25 percent.

Every few weeks someone in our inbox asks the same thing in a slightly different way. They bought a grinder, it works fine, but they are grinding two or three times to fill a bowl and they want to know if a bigger one fixes that. Or the opposite: they bought a big one, it lives on the coffee table because it will not fit anywhere, and now they want something they can actually take with them.

Both of those are sizing mistakes, and both are avoidable in about thirty seconds if you know what the number on the listing means.

The Number on the Listing Is the Diameter

A 2-inch grinder is 2 inches across the lid. It is not 2 inches tall. This trips people up constantly, partly because a few listings out there quote height instead, and partly because a 4-piece grinder is noticeably taller than a 2-piece of the same diameter.

So before you compare two grinders, check that you are comparing the same measurement. If a listing says "Height: 2 inches" and another says "Diameter: 2 inches," those are not the same product class at all.

Here is the conversion most people need, because half the industry uses inches and the other half uses millimeters:

That 50mm figure is why you will see the same grinder listed as "2 inch" on one page and "50MM" on another. Same thing.

Capacity Scales With the Square of the Diameter

This is the part that surprises people, and it is the whole reason sizing feels confusing.

Going from a 2-inch to a 2.5-inch grinder sounds like a 25 percent bump. It is not. The chamber floor is a circle, and circle area goes up with the square of the radius, so 63mm gives you about 1.6 times the floor area of 50mm. A 4-inch chamber is about four times the floor of a 2-inch and roughly 2.5 times the floor of a 2.5-inch.

In practical terms, and these are comfortable working loads rather than stuffed-to-the-lid maximums:

  • 2 inches: about a gram per pass. One or two bowls, or a single cone.
  • 2.5 inches: about two grams. A session bowl, or three to four cones in one twist.
  • 3 inches: about three grams. Getting into batch territory.
  • 4 inches: an eighth, 3.5 grams, without packing it down. Enough to prep a week or feed a rotation.

If you are grinding twice to fill one bowl, you do not need a better grinder. You need a wider one.

Where the extra diameter does not help

A wider chamber does not make the grind finer, and it does not make the teeth sharper. Tooth geometry does that, and it is a separate decision from size. We wrote about the difference in grinder tooth design, because diamond-cut teeth milled into the alloy behave very differently from stamped teeth that bend after a few months.

A wider chamber also means a longer twist arc. On a 4-inch grinder your hand travels noticeably further per rotation, which is fine on a table and annoying one-handed.

Size and Piece Count Are Two Different Decisions

People conflate these all the time, and the store shelf does not help, because bigger grinders tend to also be 4-piece.

  • 2-piece: a lid and a chamber. Twist, dump, done. Nothing to clog, nothing to lose.
  • 3-piece: adds a collection chamber below a set of holes, so ground flower falls through and the lid stays clean.
  • 4-piece: adds a screen and a kief catcher under the collection chamber.

A 2-inch 4-piece exists and it is a frustrating object, because the kief chamber on a 50mm grinder is a shallow disc that takes months to accumulate anything worth scraping. If kief is the point, the chamber diameter is doing the work, which is an argument for going up in size rather than up in piece count. Conversely, a 2.5-inch 2-piece like the classic zinc at $17.49 is genuinely my default recommendation for most people. Two halves, a magnetic lid, diamond-cut teeth, nothing to unscrew. The multi-chamber breakdown makes the case for the other direction if you want it.

Note: Threads are a failure point. A 4-piece has three threaded joints, and cheap threads strip. A 2-piece has zero.

What About Bolt Grinders and Electric Grinders

Two search terms that send people in circles, so let's be direct about both.

A bolt grinder is a form factor, not a mechanism. It is a 2.5-inch aluminum grinder machined to look like a hex bolt head, usually 2-piece. It grinds exactly like any other 2.5-inch aluminum grinder. The styling is the product. If you searched "bolt grinder" expecting a different grinding action, there isn't one.

An electric grinder is a real category, it just barely overlaps with this one. The battery-powered units are usually 50mm, they chop rather than shear, and they produce a more uneven grind than a decent manual at the same diameter. They are genuinely useful if you have hand or wrist pain, and mostly a novelty otherwise. We do not currently keep one in stock, which I would rather say plainly than pretend.

The phrase "bolt grinders electric" is two product searches that collided. If you want the aluminum hex-bolt look, that is a manual 2.5-inch. If you want motorized, that is a different product entirely.

Novelty Shapes Are Almost Always 2.5 Inches

Mushrooms, hamburgers, 8-balls, Pokeballs, dragon heads. There is a whole category of grinder that is shaped like something else, and there is a reason nearly all of them land at 2.5 inches.

At 2 inches there is not enough material to sculpt a recognizable shape around a working chamber. At 4 inches the shape gets heavy and awkward and the novelty stops being fun. So 2.5 inches is where the tooling lives, and it means the shaped ones are usually the same working diameter as a plain 2.5-inch grinder, just with more metal around the outside.

That has two practical consequences. The outer dimension is bigger than the chamber inside it, so a 2.5-inch mushroom grinder takes up more pocket than a 2.5-inch plain one while holding the same amount. And the sculpted exterior usually loses the knurled grip, which matters when your fingers are sticky.

Are they worth it? The ones that are solid zinc alloy with real milled teeth grind the same as anything else at that diameter, so you are paying roughly $4 to $5 over a plain 2.5-inch for the shape. The mushroom at $21.99 against the classic zinc at $17.49 is about the size of that premium. What I would avoid is a shaped grinder in plastic, because the shape is the selling point and the teeth are an afterthought.

Size Changes How Often You Clean It

Nobody thinks about this at purchase and everybody thinks about it three months later.

A 2-piece grinder has two surfaces and no screen. You knock it out, wipe the teeth, done, and you can do that in thirty seconds without disassembling anything. A 4-piece has a perforated floor, a mesh screen, and three threaded joints, and resin builds up in all of them. The holes clog first, and a clogged grinder feels like dull teeth even when the teeth are fine.

Bigger also means more surface. A 4-inch chamber has about four times the floor area of a 2-inch, which is four times as much area for resin to accumulate on, and the threads on a large grinder are longer and pick up more grit.

None of this is an argument against a 4-piece or a 4-inch. It is an argument for being honest with yourself about maintenance. If you know you will not deep-clean, a 2-piece zinc grinder at any diameter will stay usable far longer than a 4-piece that never gets taken apart.

Pro Tip: Freeze a metal grinder for twenty minutes before you clean it. Cold resin goes brittle and flakes off instead of smearing, and the bigger the grinder the more that saves you.

Material Matters More at Small Sizes

Zinc alloy runs about 7.1 grams per cubic centimeter. Aluminum is about 2.7. That density difference is most of why a zinc grinder feels substantial and an aluminum one of the same dimensions feels hollow.

On a 2-inch grinder that weight is doing real work. You have less leverage on a narrow lid, so the mass helps you crush a sticky strain without white-knuckling it. On a 4-inch, you have plenty of leverage from the diameter alone and the extra mass mostly just makes it heavier in a bag.

  • Zinc alloy: heaviest, best bite per twist, best for 2 to 2.5 inch. Corrosion-resistant finish holds up for years.
  • Aluminum: lighter, common in the anodized and bolt-style pieces, fine at any size.
  • Plastic: the honest answer is that it is a backup. Teeth round off, threads strip, and it lives in a glovebox. At around $6.99 that can still be the right call for a travel spare.
  • Biodegradable: a real option if you want it, same caveats as plastic on tooth life.

Note that the 2.5-inch costs the same as the 2-inch notched here. When two sizes are priced identically, take the wider one unless pocketability is the actual constraint.

How to Pick in Thirty Seconds

  1. You carry it in jeans, every day. 2 inches. 50mm fits a coin pocket. Nothing bigger does.
  2. You mostly grind at home but want it portable. 2.5 inches. This is the default and I would guess it is right for seventy percent of people reading this.
  3. You roll a lot of cones. 2.5 inches minimum. A 2-inch chamber will not fill three cones in one pass.
  4. You prep in batches, or grind for more than one person. 4-inch XL, and take the 4-piece while you are at it, because at 100mm the kief chamber actually fills.
  5. You want kief. Size up before you add pieces. Chamber diameter drives collection rate.
  6. You need a backup for the car or a trip. Plastic, any size, spend as little as possible.

Four Sizing Mistakes Worth Avoiding

Buying for the biggest session you will ever have

You will use this thing every day and host once a month. Size for the daily use. A 4-inch grinder that lives in a drawer is worse than a 2.5-inch that lives in your bag.

Assuming bigger means finer

It does not. Diameter is capacity. Tooth count and tooth shape are texture.

Ignoring lid closure on small grinders

A 2-inch grinder goes in pockets and bags, which means the lid will get bumped. A neodymium magnetic lid is the difference between a clean pocket and a bad afternoon. Threaded 4-piece lids do not have this problem, which is one of the few real arguments for a 4-piece at small sizes.

Forgetting the surface underneath

A wide grinder dumps a wide pile. If you are working on a bare table you will lose some of every pass. A work tray costs less than the flower you will scatter in a month.
