Gender is simpler and gets misread more often. A male joint is the tapered piece that inserts. A female joint is the socket that receives. A male joint on your rig needs a female banger. A female joint on your rig needs a male banger. Opposites connect.
You do not need calipers, though calipers make it painless.
For a female joint, measure the inner diameter straight across the opening. For a male joint, measure the outer diameter at the widest point of the frosted taper, right where the ground section is largest. Frosted glass is your landmark in both cases: the ground, cloudy band is the joint, and clear glass past it is not.
If the number lands near 10, 14, or 18, round to the nearest standard. There is no half-size in between. A reading of 14.4mm is a 14mm joint.
If you have no way to measure, use the bowl or banger that came with the rig as a reference and compare it against a listing photo. Guessing off a photo alone is how people end up with two adapters and neither one fits.
Ground glass joints are not a cannabis invention. They are borrowed straight from laboratory glassware, and they follow ASTM E676, the specification for interchangeable taper-ground joints. The important spec is the taper ratio: 1 in 10. For every 10mm of length along the joint, the diameter changes by 1mm.
That single ratio is why the connection works at all. A male taper wedges into a female taper along the whole ground surface instead of touching at one ring, which is what gives you a seal with no O-ring and no thread. It is also why a joint that is one size off does not "sort of" fit. The tapers are cut to different diameters, so the surfaces never make contact along their length.

A drop-down is an adapter with an offset. Instead of putting the banger directly on the rig joint, it moves the banger down and out, usually by an inch or two.
People buy them for size conversion, since most drop-downs also change joint size or gender along the way. But the reason they exist is thermal.
Borosilicate glass, the material nearly every quality rig is made from, has a coefficient of thermal expansion of about 3.3 x 10⁻⁶ per Kelvin. That low number is exactly why borosilicate survives heat that would shatter soda-lime glass, and it is the basis for the ASTM E438 Type I classification that lab glassware is held to. Low expansion means a temperature gradient across the glass produces low internal stress.
Low is not zero. Lab guidance for borosilicate is that above roughly 150°C, heating and cooling should happen slowly and evenly. Once you add an adapter you have two ground connections instead of one, and every joint is a place where gravity can win. A banger sitting in an adapter sitting in a rig is held together by friction alone.
Joint clips solve this. They are the small color-coded plastic clips that snap around a seated joint and lock the two halves together, invented by Hermann Keck in 1980 and standard in labs ever since. They are typically molded from polyacetal, they carry the size stamped into the plastic, and the color tells you the size at a glance.
There is one specification on those clips that matters enormously here and gets ignored constantly: the plastic is rated to about 140°C.
A torched banger runs far above that. If you clip the joint directly under a banger you are heating a piece of plastic well past what it was designed for, and it will soften, deform, or worse. Clip the connection that is furthest from the heat, which usually means the joint where the adapter meets the rig, and leave the banger connection unclipped. Better still, on a torch setup, use the clip only while transporting or cleaning the rig and pull it before you heat.
Mechanically yes. Practically, stop at one.
Each adapter adds length, and length on a joint is leverage. A banger on top of two stacked adapters puts a long lever arm on a connection designed for a short one, and the failure point is not the adapter you paid $6 for. It is the rig joint you cannot replace.
If one adapter does not get you there, the correct answer is different hardware, not more glass in the stack.
Ground taper joints hold by friction, and friction plus sticky residue plus a few heat cycles eventually produces a joint that will not separate. Do not muscle it. Twisting hard on glass is how joints snap.
The physics gives you the move: heat expands the outer piece. Run warm water over the female joint only, or aim a hair dryer at it, and let the socket expand away from the male taper inside it. Give it time rather than force.
If warmth alone does not do it, gentle tapping helps. Use the wooden handle of a spatula or a similar soft object and tap in the direction you want the piece to travel. Never tap glass against glass.
Prevention is easier than rescue. Seat joints firmly but do not wrench them together, and clean the ground surfaces when you clean the rig, because it is the residue in the frosted band that welds the two halves over time.
The other reason people buy adapters has nothing to do with a banger that does not fit. It is running one piece for both flower and concentrate.
