Ever wonder how a striped pipe gets lines that crisp? The answer is usually cane. Rods of solid color are lined up side by side, fused into one piece, then shaped and twisted while hot. Glassworkers call it a vac stack.

The result is a spoon where the color isn't a decoration on top. It is the pipe. Bold bands, thin white pinstripes and dark blue lines curve from the head down to a rounded mouthpiece. We grabbed this one because it looks far more involved than its size suggests.

What Makes the Vac Stack Worth It

Color through the wall. Because the body is built from color cane, there's very little plain clear glass on it.

Twist for movement. The stack is twisted as it's shaped, so the stripes sweep around the head and curve along the stem instead of running dead straight.

Pinstripe detail. Fine white lines run inside the wide bands (look close and you'll see dozens of them).

Rounded ends. A round head and a bulbed mouthpiece make it comfortable to hold and easy on the lips.

Colors and Options

Orange & Lime, our favorite, pairs bright orange and lime green bands with white pinstripes and navy lines.

Red & Yellow is the boldest, with red and yellow blocks plus green and white accents.

Blue & Orange sets sky blue against orange for the high-contrast look a lot of us like.

Every pipe is hand-worked, so band widths and how far the twist turns vary a little piece to piece.

The 5" Twisted Vac Stack Cane Hand Pipe is a 5 inch borosilicate glass spoon with a built-in bowl and a side carb. Its body is made from stacked color cane that was fused and twisted. It comes in Orange & Lime, Red & Yellow or Blue & Orange and is made for dry herb.

How to Use It

Fill the bowl loosely with ground flower. Cover the carb, light the top, and draw slowly. Release the carb to clear the chamber at the end.

Pro Tip: Because the walls are mostly opaque color, we check the bowl from above instead of from the side to see how much is left.

Who It's For

Pattern lovers: You want stripes that look sharp up close.

Gift givers: It's colorful and easy to wrap, and we think it makes a great birthday pick.

Everyday smokers: Five inches is a solid daily size (comfortable in hand, easy to bag).

Worth Noting: The opaque cane walls make it hard to see resin building in the stem, so clean it on a schedule rather than by eye.

Care and Cleaning

We tap out the bowl after each session. For a full clean, soak in 91% isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt in a zip bag, shake, rinse with warm water and air dry. The stripes are glass, so cleaning won't fade them.

Warning: Let the pipe cool all the way before washing it. Hot glass under cold water can crack. Keep it out of the dishwasher.

Common Questions

What does vac stack cane mean?
Vac stack cane means rods of colored glass are stacked side by side and fused into one solid section. That section is then shaped and twisted into the pipe. It's why the stripes on this 5 inch spoon look so crisp and run straight through the glass.
Can I see inside the stem to check for resin?
Mostly no, since the walls are dense color cane with little clear glass between the bands. You'll judge it by the draw instead. When the pull starts to feel tight, it's time for a salt and alcohol soak and a pass with a pipe cleaner.
Which color pair is the brightest?
Red & Yellow is the brightest, with big blocks of red and yellow plus green and white accents. Orange & Lime is close behind and feels more summery. Blue & Orange has the strongest contrast between its two main colors, so it pops from a distance.
Will the stripes wear off with cleaning?
No, the stripes are the glass itself, so alcohol, salt and pipe cleaners won't fade or scratch them away. Resin can dull the look between cleans. A good soak brings the color right back to how it looked when it was new.
Is the mouthpiece rounded?
Yes, the mouthpiece ends in a rounded bulb rather than a narrow tip. It's comfortable on the lips and gives the 5 inch spoon a balanced shape. The head is round as well, so there are no sharp edges on either end.
How long is this striped spoon?
It's 5 inches from the mouthpiece to the back of the head. That's a full daily size that still fits most jacket pockets and bags. For long trips, we'd carry it in a soft pouch so the glass doesn't knock against keys.
Does every pipe look exactly like the photo?
Close, but not exactly. Each pipe is hand-worked, so band widths, pinstripe spacing and the amount of twist vary a little. The color pair you choose (Orange & Lime, Red & Yellow or Blue & Orange) stays the same as shown.
