A lot of spoons look great in the case and then feel slippery and anonymous in your hand. This one gives your fingers something to find: a single maria ring on the neck, right where your grip naturally lands.

Around that ring, there's a lot going on. The body is covered in color frit. A red, yellow and green stripe runs the full length of one side, and wavy blue and white squiggles loop across the bowl and down the tube. We picked it for this lineup because it packs heady-shop detail into a plain, easy 5 inch shape.

Why the Maria Spoon Stands Out

The ring does real work. The maria gives you a fixed hold point back from the bowl, and it keeps the pipe from rolling off a table if you set it on its side.

Three layers of color. Frit for the base, a solid tri-color stripe for structure, and loose squiggles on top. It reads busy up close and clean from across the room.

Lines fused flush. Everything is glass melted into glass. Run your thumb along the stripe and you won't feel an edge.

Comfortable length. At 5 inches there's enough tube to take a slow pull, and it still drops into a bag pocket (our team carries one in a padded case).

Colors and Options

Green is the earthy pick, with a mossy frit body that blends with the stripe.

Pink has a pale, speckled body that makes the blue squiggles jump out (this one gets the most second looks).

Blue is the boldest, with deep frit that makes the white outlines on the squiggles glow.

All three are hand-worked, so the squiggle pattern and stripe placement vary a little from piece to piece. Yours won't be a carbon copy of the photo, and that's part of the appeal.

The 5" Frit Color Line Maria Hand Pipe is a 5 inch borosilicate glass spoon pipe with a raised maria ring on the neck. It has a built-in bowl and a side carb. The body is covered in color frit with a red, yellow and green stripe and blue and white squiggle lines. It comes in Green, Pink or Blue and is made for dry herb.

How to Use It

Hold the pipe with your fingers just behind the maria and your fingertip over the carb. Pack the bowl loosely (we go with a medium grind), light the top layer and draw slowly. Lift off the carb at the end to clear the tube.

Pro Tip: Use the maria as your guide when passing the pipe. Hand it over bowl-first with your fingers on the ring, and nobody grabs the hot head by mistake.

Who It's For

The grip-first smoker: You like a pipe that sits the same way in your hand every time. We get it.

The color-heavy collector: You want a piece that looks like it came from a glassblower's bench, not a bulk bin.

The rolling-paper convert: You're trying a pipe for the first time and want one you'll actually enjoy looking at.

Worth Noting: The colored body makes it harder to see resin inside, so set a cleaning schedule instead of waiting for it to look dirty.

Care and Cleaning

We dump the ash after each bowl and run a pipe cleaner through the stem every few days. For a full clean, seal the pipe in a bag with 91% isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, shake it, let it sit for twenty minutes, then rinse with warm water. Pay extra attention to the bowl and the mouthpiece end, since that's where resin collects.

Warning: Clean it only after the glass has cooled completely. Sudden temperature changes can crack borosilicate, and the maria is a thicker spot that holds heat longer. Don't put it in the dishwasher.

Common Questions

What is the maria on this pipe?
The maria is the raised glass ring around the neck, just behind the bowl head. It works as a finger stop, so your grip lands in the same spot every time and stays back from the hot bowl. It also stops the pipe from rolling far if you set it on its side.
What do the three colors look like?
Green, Pink and Blue name the frit body color, and all three share the same linework. Each has a red, yellow and green stripe down one side plus wavy blue and white squiggles. Green looks earthy, Pink looks soft and bright, and Blue looks the most saturated.
Are the lines painted on?
No, the stripe and the squiggles are colored glass fused into the body. They're laid on while the glass is hot and melted flush with the surface. That means no paint to chip, no decal to peel, and nothing that fades after a soak in isopropyl alcohol and salt.
How long is this pipe and does it fit a pocket?
This pipe is 5 inches long. That fits a jacket pocket, a backpack pouch or a padded case without trouble, though it's a bit long for a front jeans pocket. The extra inch over a 4 inch spoon gives smoke a little more distance to cool before it reaches you.
Does the frit get dirty faster than clear glass?
Frit on the outside doesn't hold resin, but the colored body hides buildup better than clear glass. You'll notice resin mostly through the bowl and the mouthpiece end. We'd soak it every couple of weeks with daily use to keep the draw open and the color crisp.
Where is the carb on this pipe?
The carb is a small hole on the side of the bowl head. Cover it with a fingertip while you light and draw, then lift off to pull the last of the smoke through. Most righties cover it with the left hand, but both sides work fine once you find your grip.
