Do you put water in a dab rig? Yes, and it goes in the main chamber only. Never in the banger, never in the joint. The whole job of that water is to cool and filter vapor on its way to your lungs, and it only does that job if the level is right: enough to cover the perc slits by about half an inch, and not one bit more.
Quick answer: Yes. Fill a dab rig with room-temperature water until the downstem or perc slits are covered by roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch, then stop. Water goes in the main chamber only, never in the quartz banger.
That is the answer most people came here for. The rest of this is the stuff nobody tells you: how the number changes for recyclers, how to test the level in ten seconds without heating anything, and the two situations where you should run a rig dry.

Water in a dab rig does two things. It drops the vapor temperature before it hits your throat, and it breaks the vapor into smaller bubbles so more of it makes contact with cool water instead of arriving as one hot slug. Skip the water and a 500F dab feels like it is scraping your throat on the way down. Overfill it and you get water in your mouth, which is worse.
The rule that works on almost every rig on our shelves:
Cover the slits by 1/4 to 1/2 inch, and leave at least an inch of dry glass between the waterline and the joint.
That is it. On a standard 10-inch bent-neck rig with a showerhead or turbine perc, that usually lands somewhere between a shot glass and a shot glass and a half of water. Do not measure it in ounces. Measure it against the slits, because the slit height is what actually varies from rig to rig.
Why the half inch matters: below about a quarter inch of coverage, some of your vapor slips past the diffusion entirely and you get a harsh, dry hit with a bubbling sound but no real cooling. Above a half inch, you are forcing your lungs to pull air through a taller column of water for no extra cooling benefit, and the extra drag is what launches droplets up the neck.
Do this before you ever touch a torch:
If water climbs into the neck or reaches your lips, dump some out. If it barely bubbles and you hear more air than water, add a little. If you get a full rolling bubble with the waterline staying put, you are done. This works because splashback is a function of how hard you pull, and a hard dry pull is more aggressive than any dab you will actually take.
Most people who complain about bong water in their mouth are overfilled by less than half an inch. It is that sensitive.
The half-inch rule is a starting point, not gospel. Different geometry wants different levels.
Easiest case. Cover the slits by a half inch and go. If the downstem is removable, pull it and look at where the cuts sit before you fill. Our downstems run different slit heights depending on the piece, so eyeballing the actual part beats assuming.
These sit higher in the chamber and have more slits spread over more area. Cover the lowest row of holes by about a half inch. The upper holes do not need to be submerged; they are there to spread the pull, not to bubble. Overfilling a matrix perc is the fastest way to get splashback, because a matrix is already high-drag and you are stacking more resistance on top of it.
This is where most people get it wrong, and recyclers are a third of the in-stock rigs we carry, so it comes up a lot.
A recycler is not supposed to be filled to a static line. It is a loop: water gets pushed from the lower chamber up through the intake into the upper chamber, then drains back down. Fill a recycler noticeably less than you think. Enough to submerge the perc in the bottom chamber and no more.
The test is different too. Pull on it and watch the cycle. If water is spinning through the loop and returning to the bottom chamber, that is correct. If the upper chamber fills and stays full, or if the loop chokes and stalls, you have too much water in there. A properly filled recycler looks half empty when it is sitting still. That is the point. It is why they cool so well without needing a tall water column.
Incyclers behave the same way, just with the recycling arm inside the body rather than outside.

Small body, small volume, tight tolerance. On a 6-inch fab egg you might be working with two tablespoons of usable range between "not covering the perc" and "in your mouth". Fill it slowly and run the pull test. These are worth the extra fifteen seconds.
Three places, and getting this wrong ruins hardware.
Quartz gets to 500F and above. Water hitting hot quartz is thermal shock, and thermal shock is how bangers crack, usually right at the weld where the stem meets the bucket. It is also how you get water flashing to steam in your face. Your quartz banger holds concentrate and nothing else. Every rig we ship includes a free 14mm quartz banger, and the fastest way to kill a brand new one is to fill the rig with the banger still seated and then tip it while carrying it to the sink.
Pull the banger off before you fill. Every time. It takes two seconds and it saves you a banger.
The same applies to residual water. If you rinse a banger, it needs to be genuinely dry before it goes back on and gets heated. A few drops in the bottom of the bucket will not crack it, but they will boil, spit, and ruin the first dab of the session.
If water pools in the female joint, it wicks into the ground glass, and the next time you seat a hot banger you get a hiss and a stress fracture at the joint. Ground glass joints are the thinnest, most stressed part of the piece, and they are the most expensive part to have fail because it takes the whole rig with it.
If you splash the joint while filling, dry it with a paper towel before you reattach anything. Filling through the mouthpiece instead of the joint avoids the problem entirely, and it is faster once you get used to it.
If the waterline is anywhere near the mouthpiece at rest, the level is wrong regardless of what the perc looks like. Water sitting in the neck means the first hard pull sends it straight to your mouth, and on a bent-neck rig it also means water can run out the mouthpiece when you set the piece down at an angle.
Fill level gets all the attention, but what you fill with changes the hit more than most people expect.
Tap water is fine in most places and it is what nearly everyone uses. The exception is hard water. If your tap leaves white scale on a kettle, it will leave the same mineral film inside the rig, and that film builds into the cloudy haze that never quite scrubs off the inside of a perc. If you have hard water, filtered water is a cheap upgrade that keeps the glass clear for months longer.
Distilled water is the enthusiast answer. It leaves no mineral deposits at all, so the glass stays clean and the taste stays neutral. Whether you can perceive the flavor difference is debatable. Whether your perc stays clear longer is not.
Room temperature is the default, and it should be your baseline before you experiment.
Ice water does cool harder. It also does two things people do not expect. Very cold vapor can suppress the terpene aroma you specifically paid for, since the volatile compounds that carry smell and flavor condense faster in a cold column. And some people find the sharp temperature swing rougher on the throat rather than smoother, which is the opposite of the intended effect.
Try both on the same concentrate back to back. Do not assume colder is automatically better, because for flavor chasing it frequently is not.
Water is heavier than people account for. A tall rig filled well past the recommended line becomes top-heavy in the wrong way and tips more easily, and a tipped rig full of water is how most pieces actually break. Correct fill level is a stability feature as much as a flavor one.
Two legitimate cases, and one that people try to justify and should not.
Some have a small water chamber, most do not. If yours has no chamber, running it dry is correct, not a compromise. You are trading filtration for portability and a shorter vapor path, and a lot of people prefer the flavor that way. The tradeoff is heat: a dry straw gives you no cooling at all, so it rewards a lower tip temperature and a smaller dab than you would take on a rig.
If yours does have a chamber, the same rule applies in miniature. Cover the intake and stop. These hold so little water that a quarter inch of overfill is the difference between working and delivering a mouthful.
Running a rig with the perc barely submerged gives you the least-filtered read on what a concentrate actually tastes like. Water strips a small amount of terpene expression along with the heat. If you are evaluating a new batch of live rosin rather than just enjoying it, less water gets you closer to the truth.
Just know the hit will be hotter and rougher, so keep the dab small and the temperature low. This is a diagnostic setting, not a daily driver.
Running your daily rig dry because you are lazy about refills. You will feel it in your throat by the third dab, and the harshness will get blamed on the concentrate or the temperature when the actual cause is an empty chamber. If refilling feels like a chore, that is an argument for a smaller or simpler piece, not for skipping the water.
Old rig water is not neutral. It picks up reclaim, it goes cloudy, and by the second day it starts to smell and taste like it. That taste transfers to your dabs, which is the part people miss when they blame a "harsh" concentrate.
That last one is the habit that separates a rig that still looks new at a year from one that has permanent haze. Empty glass stores fine indefinitely. Full glass does not.
There is a real reason people leave water in longer than they should: reclaim collects in it, and some dabbers want to recover that. If that is you, do it deliberately. Run the water down on purpose, collect it, and then clean the piece properly rather than treating a dirty rig as a passive collection method. Reclaim you scrape out of a rig you were going to clean anyway is a bonus. Reclaim you got by dabbing through four-day-old water cost you flavor on every hit that produced it.
Keep a silicone pad under the rig while you are dumping and refilling. Most cracked rigs do not break during a dab. They break in the sink.

Water in your mouth every time. Overfilled, or pulling too hard, usually both. Drop the level a quarter inch and pull slower.
Loud gurgle, no cooling. Underfilled. Slits are not covered.
Hit feels heavy and hard to pull. Too much water on a high-drag perc. Matrix and showerhead percs need less water than a simple downstem, not more.
Recycler will not cycle. Almost always overfilled. Dump half of it and pull again.
Water creeping up the neck between hits. The level is fine but you are pulling harder than the perc can pass. Ease off, or step down to a rig with a simpler perc. Stale taste on a clean banger. The water. Change it.
No. A silicone rig takes water the same way a glass one does, same fill line, same slit rule. The difference is what happens after: silicone will not crack when you knock it into the faucet, and it goes in the dishwasher, so people running silicone rigs tend to change their water more often simply because it is less of a chore. That is a real advantage even though it has nothing to do with the fill level.
