Using it
Pack the bottom loose and the top a bit firmer. You can literally watch the airflow work: if the ember stalls and the smoke thins, the pack is too tight and you can see it through the wall.
Take it out of the joint before you tip the pipe to empty it. A bubble head holds ash in the curve and it will dump into the water if you turn the whole pipe over.

Soak in isopropyl with coarse salt, agitate it, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Push a pipe cleaner through the hole while the residue is soft. Because the walls are clear, you can hold it up to the light afterwards and see whether you actually got it all.
Warning: Let the bowl cool before it touches cold water. A sudden temperature drop puts stress through the thinnest part of the head and can crack it, and a crack near the joint will not survive being seated again.
